The Outfit Formula I'm Wearing All Summer Long

If there’s any place that nails summer without fail, it’s New York City. Block parties are in full swing. Picnics with the skyline in view are no longer a weekend-specific activity. Fire hydrants become pools and the word “outside” takes on a whole new meaning. Aside from the unforgettable memories that the city’s unrivaled settings bring, there’s one aspect about a New York summer that stands alone  — the style.

Being one of fashion’s main capitals, the city masters dressing in all seasons, but she truly comes alive in the summertime. Perhaps, your mind goes to staples like the Y2K denim maxi skirt, or the quintessential Yankees cap that one can wear with any outfit. Let’s not forget jerseys of all types (baseball and soccer included) that adorn the streets of New York everyday.

As a native who’s Brooklyn-born and raised and a proud inheritor of the city’s sartorial supremacy, there’s one piece at the top of my repertoire this season: a jersey. As pictured, I wore a yellow football-inspired jersey with a ruched cargo skirt and classic Adidas Sambas. To accessorize, I rocked black oversize frames with yellow lenses and personalized gold jewelry, directly reminiscent of New York’s hip-hop fashion scene in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

While this outfit formula may be simple in theory, each detail plays into the overall success of the look. The yellow serves as a refreshing pop of color which evokes the spirit of summer, while the skirt’s structure adds that urban edge. Athletic pieces are also easy to throw on considering the season’s merciless heat, while being one of the best ways to express your identity through clothing. Whether you have a favorite team or you’re exploring your casual side, incorporating jerseys into your outfit is the perfect option that’s not only aesthetically pleasing, but a reflection of who you are.
