I Survived New York Fashion Week 2023 — Here's What I Wore

The most wonderful time of year has resurfaced once again — Fashion Month! For those who don't know, Fashion Month is the highly anticipated annual event that showcases a slew of innovative collections by some of the industry's most talented designers (old and new) for the upcoming season, in this case Spring/Summer 2024. It also boasts plenty of sartorial inspiration from the best street style stars, editors and celebrities alike, and puts on some of the best parties. As always, New York kicked off the madness with notable presentations from industry giants like Area and Dion Lee, and I was so grateful to attend various shows as a published fashion writer. While Fashion Week is historically a good time, the daunting challenge of viewing shows in such a jam-packed schedule always presents itself, but I'd be remiss not to do it in style. With all the chaos, I didn't get photos in all my looks, but keep scrolling to see my strongest from this NYFW.

Not only did this season mark my fourth year of attending shows, but I also spoke at my first major panel presented by Black Style X! For the momentous occasion, I knew I wanted to showcase my natural style, but look elevated. The first portion of the festivities called for a pre-panel dinner with an all-black dress code. Naturally, I'm a bold color girl so I found another way to make a statement while staying in theme, in a classic LBD with dramatic sleeves and my go-to lace up heels. To add a polished feel, I threw on my satin, ruched purse.

For the panel day, I envisioned a look that exuded ultimate main character energy. I proceeded to order a silver, fishnet floor-length dress and to my surprise, the package did not come in time, forcing me to pick something out of my closet. Of course, I panicked for a few minutes, but quickly grabbed this ivory, fringe number from POC brand, Kadimah. I was originally saving it for vacation, but if there's ever a time to bring your sartorial best, it's Fashion Week. In the midst of the chaos, my look for the panel turned out beautifully, as I paired the dress with gold platform heels and my staple gold jewelry.

I closed out the week's festivities with my most edgy, boundary-pushing look to date. Casually, I wore a rope dress layered over a form-fitting minidress with bandana-print, denim boots. To take things a step further, I accessorized with a blue durag and '90s large frames, and a small denim tote. I was most proud of this look, because I stayed true to who I am while taking a risk, and in the most beautiful way, it just worked. I expressed myself by doing something that hadn't been done before, and that's what fashion is really all about.
